The Marana Police Department would like to notify our residents, particularly the elderly, to be aware of an on-going scam that has been taking place in the Tucson and Phoenix areas. The scam is as follows: Suspect 1 will knock on the door and tell the elderly resident that he is with a local company and he needs to get into the backyard to take some measurements. The victim will meet Suspect 1 in the backyard. Suspect 1 will engage the victim by having them help measure or recording the measurements on his clipboard. While they are busy in the backyard, Suspect 2 enters the unsecured house and ransacks it. He mainly takes jewelry and currency. In two cases, a safe was stolen. Suspect 1 and Suspect 2 communicate by cell phone. It appears that shortly after Suspect 1 receives a call (presumably from Suspect 2), he tells the victim he is done. Suspect 2 is inside the house for approximately 20-30 minutes. It is unknown if the suspects in all the cases are the same or if there is a group out doing this same scam. The incidents generally occur between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm, and can happen any day of the week. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
